Stone Troughs were originally made from the local stone of the area - to be used as cattle/horse feed or water containers. Most stone troughs date from the last 200years, the colour of the stone varies depending on the area of the UK that the trough came from. The stone trough would have been hand carved by the estate workers, this would have been a very labour intensive job, but this is the reason why they are still around today.
