Victorian front doors can never have enough top coats on them - that's official!!  The main reason why people have problems with front doors sticking or draughty gaps is caused by the wood being able to breathe. To prevent a Victorian front door from expanding or contracting it is necessary to seal the timber by giving it a minimum of 4 coats of paint, the top and bottom edges of the door should also be painted. Once fitted correctly and sufficient layers of paint have been applied, then the door should last a lifetime.
